How does Bruno from the boy in the striped pyjamas make you feel sympathetic?

Well Bruno makes you feel sympathetic because he explains how the boy is treated cruelly, and lives in a concentration camp. Bruno doesn't understand the whole concentration camp, but he feels bad for him regardless, just because of what happened to Shmuel. BTW how far are you in the book?
